Is (read more) a good idea?
« on: 24 July 2009, 18:04:39 »
Hi guys.  Have a general question here.  Do you think have hidden text on a page which is revealed by clicking on a (read more) link is a good idea.

You can see where I have used this concept http://www.demo.chouselive.co.za/activities/activities.html

Basically I want readers to easy see what is available but have easy access to additional information if they want to find out more.

Can you see any disadvantages to this?

Any thought is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Cara

My only problem with things like this, is what happens if a user has JS disabled?

Hi Scott.
Well with this little js snippet the read more links disappear and the whole page is visible.

Well looking at the page with JS disabled, it does make it a very long page...

Ah that was gonna be my next point lol.

Even if it makes it a long page, it's not really a problem. I'd suggest coding in some anchor links, so that if the text is shown, people can still navigate easily :)

Even with the JS on - it gets a bit disorientating when the content unrolls past the fold.
Have you thought about moving each heading up as a sub-navigation bar under the existing one? So if you hover or click on one of the existing 'parent level' tabs they're displayed beneath?
I would think that you'll need to use PHP to include the content to make sure that even when the JS is off it doesn't create one long page.

Just thoughts.

Oh, and I used to live and work in Paignton - but never went to church I'm affraid.  :rolleyes2:

For what you want to use it for I think it is a good idea, as you already have your subsections on the page, so having sub sub sections so that there wasn't as much text might annoy some people. As it works without JS then there isn't really that much of a problem, other than if it is disabled there being a lot of text...maybe you could have anchor points on the page, and have it so that JS hides the links at the top of the page, this way when JS isn't being used and someone just wants info on an activity that is halfway down or at the bottom of the page they can still easily jump to it :)

Wizely, as always good thoughts :)  Just for the record, I have never been to the UK let alone Paignton, so you are one up on me

Dizi, I really like your idea.  I am going to see if I can get that to work.  In a sense, if I understand correctly, it is similar to what Wizely suggests but seems like it would be easier :)

I know very little about javascript, but I think I could get this to work.

Ooo, a challenge!

I prefer it, gives the reader the choice to carry on or skip to another section, less scrolling is mroe productive.
