Drop down menu's
« on: 31 October 2009, 05:18:49 »
Hello All

Was a wondering.  If you need a drop down menu on your site, how do you go about creating it?  I am not asking about the coding or even the css?  I am more interested to know, do you prefer css only methods or do you use a little javascript for IE6.  Is their a particular pattern you use.  I have always used stu nicholls adaptation of the suckerfish menu which he calls the skeleton menu.

Hi Cara, it really depends on the links - how many levels deep they are, how much space each takes up, and how much room you have for the menu as a whole. What would work best given what you to have to build with/around? Then when that's all worked out I'll think about whether it needs any fancy javascript. I don't think there's any set way of approaching it, although I'd aim for using the latest techniques and then work a bit of backwards compatibility into it. Don't let ie6 stop you from building a kick-arse menu, just make sure it works well enough in ie6 to do the job.
