Code vs WYSIWYG - In a perfect world...
« on: 01 December 2009, 22:50:47 »
So, everyone here knows that WYSIWYG editors generally produce lousy code yeah?

So here's a theoretical question for you:

If a WYSIWYG editor ever arrived, that actually created valid, semantic, lightweight pages/code, would you use it? Or would you still stick to coding by hand?

Or are you one of those who currently uses a WYSIWYG editor, and think you can convince us you're right?

As always try and keep it (relatively) clean, and non-personal.

I wouldn't use it!
And I'll tell you why:  even the best wysiwyg editors of the future might generate super clean code, but that doesn't make is usable code.  For example classes and IDs. By the time you've gone in and replaced the generic ones to describe the content that is being marked up, you might as well do it by hand.  Even if someone makes one that cooks up something better than div soup, I still won't be interested.

Usable code is produced by humans. End of.

Agreed... to make it your own and to make what you have created editable for you in the future it's easier to just do it your bloomin' self! A woman's work is never done - *SIGH*

I've actually been experimenting for a few months trying to build an on-line page creator thingy.
I've decided to shelve it for the time being because, as has already been said, it could never be intuitive enough. It's impossible to second guess what people are trying to achieve when building a page.
If adobe can't do it correctly, I'm bloody sure I can't :)

I use Dreamweaver  at work, ok I use it in code mode but to the elitist coder it is frowned upon that I use it how I use it, I lazy person code with it as it is much quicker    :evillaugh:

I would never use it as a WYSIWYG editor though as I like being in control and knowing what code is there, plus I have my own little coding habits which helps me when editing later on.  I just think WYSIWYG editors make this a little harder when you know what you are doing.  Then again if it produced perfect code there is no real reason not to use it, unless it is easier and quicker to just do it yourself :p

I love Dreamweaver, but I use it for hardcoding mostly. I do on occasion glance down at the WYSIWYG area but it's often wrong and nothing like it is in the wild. That being said, WYSIWYG, if it got better at writing code I would use it more. I'm not saying that I would substitute it for hardcode but sometimes seeing something and not having to refresh a browser is nice.
