Add to cart Vs add to basket
« on: 20 July 2009, 11:04:13 »
Ok so the add to basket/cart button is probably the most important button of all in an ecommerce site, but which do you think has a greater call to action?

I have changed mine from cart to basket and to be honest it hasn't really effected my conversion rate.

I changed it because of amazon, the world biggest retailer.  In the USA they use add to cart and over here in the good ole U of K they use basket.

So vote, which has a strong call to action with you?

Thanks for the replies....

But why?  Why does basket sound more appealing and make you want to click more than cart?

It's a question of my general disapproval of the mass importation of American culture! Those pesky yanks, bringing their mis-spelled, mis-pronounced, bastardised (notice there is no 'z' in there) English. Grrrrrr! :D

guess you could always be different and have it as 'add to trolley'

I don't really think that you would get a bigger conversion based on what is written on your button to add it to the list, I think the majority of people who shop online know that both add to basket and add to cart result in the same thing...I have seen some e-commerce sites that just simply have add, or order as their buttons and so it must work for them.

As for the why is Cart = American and Basket = UK.  I think that it is simply because the majority of  people in the UK don't use a shopping cart when they go to supermarket they use a trolley, and trolley sounds crap, while basket sounds that little more friendly.

Going on from what Dizi said, you could be a bit creative/different.......... by using something like bag, carriage etc (I'm sure you get the idea)

Is this for your filthy new secks shop?  If so, I think the last of your concerns should be cart/ basket - I think your customers will have other things on their minds :D

I like basket, but I have always wondered whether "Buy Me" would work, although it does sound as though you encouranging the user just to buy that oen product whereas basket sounds like your asking them to keep moving around.

Yeah, I like that idea!  I agree with your concerns as well, hummm.  Might have to test that one.
